Asphalt Resurfacing

Asphalt resurfacing means installing a new layer of blacktop over the existing layer of blacktop on the driveway. You will also hear this process referred to as overlaying or capping a driveway. We recommend an overlay to our customer when the existing driveway is stable and we properly address the existing surface. This may include installing a leveling course or applying material over large singular cracks.

Leaving the existing blacktop driveway in place is always the first option we consider. Asphalt provides a stronger base than gravel and resurfacing the driveway saves our customers unnecessary excavation costs.

The process for driveway repair and resurfacing would be to remove asphalt that is next to surrounding surfaces such as a garage floor, sidewalk or street, then clean the existing surface free of weeds and debris, followed by applying a bonding agent to the existing driveway, and finally, installing 2.5” of asphalt that we compact to a finished depth of 2.0”. We then tamp the edges of the driveway to smooth the surface.

Asphalt Replacement

Asphalt Replacement of driveways is necessary when the existing asphalt is badly deteriorated or the underlying gravel base shows indications that it is failing. Removing and replacing asphalt is also necessary if the proper drainage of the driveway cannot be achieved because the area is too flat.

The driveway replacement process begins with excavating the existing layer of asphalt. We then inspect the gravel base and determine if there are any areas that need to be removed or if additional gravel needs to be added prior to paving. The gravel base is then graded and compacted. Then we install 2.5” of asphalt and and compact it to a finished depth of 2.0”. We tamp the edges of the driveway for a smooth surface.

New Driveway Installation

New Driveway Installation is accomplished by excavating and grading the soil. Any necessary drainage solutions or stabilization fabrics are installed at this time if necessary. An 8.0” gravel base is then installed and compacted in 4” layers. The next step is installing 2.5” of asphalt and we compact that to a finished depth of 2.0”. We then tamp the driveeway edges for smoothness.

Sealcoating - Driveway Sealing

Driveway Sealing is a must! Sealcoating your driveway to protect it from harmful effects of water and sun is necessary for the longevity and health of your driveway. We can refer you to a qualified sealacoat contractor to help maintain your driveway by filling cracks and applying sealcoat to the driveway every 2-4 years. Depending on the age and condition of the driveway 1 to 2 coats of coal tar asphalt sealer is applied per manufacturer specifications. New asphalt driveways should undergo driveway sealing within 12 months of installation, but should not be sealed sooner than 90 days after being installed.
