The Paving Process for Tar and Chip

Tar and chip paving is accomplished by applying liquid asphalt through the use of a special piece of equipment called a “distributor” truck. The distributor sprays the liquid asphalt directly on the existing surface and then a layer of stone chips approximately 3/8” in size is spread over top of the asphalt and compacted. The stone chips are embedded into the asphalt. As the asphalt hardens a bond is created with the stone chips creating a hardened surface that strengthens and waterproofs the existing drive. The finished look is a gravel drive with a well groomed appearance. An assortment of different colored stone chips is available to the customer.

Which Homes Are Best for Tar and Chip Pavement?

We do not recommend homes with steep driveways opt for tar and chip pavement. Due to the potential erosion, other paving options would be better. Any residential home not on a steep drive could be a good candidate for tar and chip.
