Neglecting your driveway during the hard snowfalls of winter can be extremely detrimental to it. This is because snow and ice falls into the cracks and holes in your driveway and expands them, creating even bigger cracks and holes; which can then ruin your car as you drive over them over and over again.

Now that we have your attention, a good place to start (within the next few weeks) is with inspecting your driveway for holes and cracks and then patching them up before the snow falls.

Some tips on how safeguard your driveway this winter are as follows:

  • Clean and repair all of the holes and cracks in the pavement the day before seal coating it. Call a professional if you need help.
  • Remove ice and snow from the driveway as soon as possible. The freezing and thawing process can crack and damage your driveway.
  • Use de-icing materials on your asphalt driveway, but be careful to not get those materials near concrete aprons or sidewalks.
PLEASE NOTE: We typically stop paving driveways by the beginning of December, so be sure to book an appointment before then! If paving your driveway just isn't in the budget this year, we'll be happy to come out and to provide an estimate this winter so you can budget the project for next year.

The Look of a Freshly Paved Driveway or Parking Lot

The freshly paved driveway "look," and the overall appearance of your driveway creates an impression about your home and property. As the National Asphalt Pavement Association puts it, "An inviting driveway provides a focal point as passersby and visitors approach your home." The association goes on to say that a good-looking driveway also adds to value to your property and is a good investment for you as a homeowner.

What is it made of and how is it applied to the driveway?

Asphalt is a mixture of stone, sand and liquid asphalt cement. It's engineered to stay strong and in tact, and it's engineered to look good, too. The mixture is heated and proportioned out while being liquefied at about 300 degrees F. After heating comes placement; while it's still hot, it'll be applied to the driveway and then a base coat will be placed on top. Very soon after placement, the mixture will cool and harden.

Benefits of Asphalt Pavement

Pave your driveway this fall to prepare for the winter. Why would you want to do that? Well, we'll tell you...

Asphalt pavement is:

  • Durable and strong
  • Withstands extreme cold and thawing
  • Unaffected by salt in the winter
  • Designed to flex/give with slight settlements or frost heave
Moreover, if a utility line passes under an asphalt driveway, repairs can be performed more easily and quickly than with concrete type driveways.

We’ve compiled a list of reasons someone might have their driveway laid with asphalt pavement this summer…check ‘em out below!

           1.      It’s economical. Having your driveway paved is financially sensible. Most properly-constructed asphalt pavement lasts 20 years or longer. That’s a lot of years, and a lot of saving in the long run.

           2.      It looks great. Fresh-looking driveways will make your home and vehicles look better. The two will complement each other. It’ll raise your real estate value, too.

           3.      It’s easier to drive on. Asphalt driveways repel ice and snow in the winter, and dirt and mud won’t stick to them as easily in the summer.

           4.      Paved driveways are easier to maintain. If they become dirty, give them a once-over with a hose.

           5.      They’re very durable. Asphalt pavement that was laid in Washington State on Interstate 90 has lasted more than 35 years since its construction. The chief engineer for the interstate has said it’ll last another 50 years because of its durable construction.
